Restore USMT2.UNC with FASTconv.exe

If you fail when trying to recover files with Microsofts Files and Settings Transfer Wizard, this is what you can do. The guide is for Windows XP.

Create a folder named "FAST" at at your local harddrive.

Copy your "USMT2.UNC" folder to this location.

Create the folders "tmp" and "des" at the same location.

Download this file, unzip it and copy the file "FASTConv.exe" to the same location.

Click "Start" and "Run" in your Start-menu and type in "cmd" and hit Enter.

Type "cd c:\FAST" and hit Enter to go to your FAST-folder you created.

Paste/write this in your command-line console:
"FASTconv /i /s:USMT2.UNC /d:des /t:tmp /k" and hit Enter.

You will then see that files are ectracting. After it is finnished you will see your files inside the folder "des".

Good luck! :-)

I have followed your directions to the letter and get "source store is invalid". Is there an easy fix for this, or did I blow the directions? Any further help would be appreciated.

Try to point fastconv to the directory above the USMT2.UNC-folder.

Or maybe you are working on another drive than c:?

Wow! It works! Thanks for the info!

I followed instrutions to the letter but all I'm getting is help text (a description and the arguements list). What am I doing wrong?

Awesome, 12.2 gb worth of .dat files transformed into readable content. Thanks so much

Unknown said...

I had a .dat file called USMT2IMG.

I found out that I had to use the rmv2opq.exe application to convert the IMT2IMG.dat file to the USMT2.UNC

Then, using the FASTconv.exe, got the files to extract to the tmp folder.

Unknown said...

Oh Boy 8>(

Extraction almost complete and then it says "cannot read all images from source store error:13"

- - - and the des folder is still empty.

Do you know a way to have FASTconv ignore the errors and complete what it can?

Or a way to convert the .DAT's in the tmp folder?

Anyway Neppers, I sure appreciate this Blog. Thanks for the help.

Tried running Fastconv with the V verify parameter to see if I could identify the offending file so that I could use run FASTconv with the E excluding that file.

No good. The Verify says "cannot read all images from source store error:13" again.

(I think something must really be fubar in that original data.)

I am trying TrId.exe to see if it can identify the files I still have in the tmp folder.

Thanks for this. Unfortunately it's not working for me (using Windows 7 after stupidly using XP's File & Transfer Wizard).

The temp files are created, but Fastconv stops working as soon as the Transdb.dat file is extracted to Tmp. I'm stumped now. I ran Fastconv using the /v switch and got a message that my files were good and were ready for extraction.

So what's stopping the next step?

Unknown said...

I dont not have win7 unfortunately. Anyone else know how to do this in win7?

Tsukiyomi said...

Ok, an update of sorts. The .dat files that Fastconv put into the 30 Temp folder appear to be my original files, just named as D8C, etc. If I convert each .dat extenstion I can eventually get files back but I don't know which are which (there are 118,000 of them). Now it's a matter of trying different file extensions for each individual file.

To anyone getting "source store invalid."
Download FastImgWiz (downloads.com or google). Install and find the fastconv from the install directory and try it. The commands are the same and I'm having good luck with that version.

I'm having a similar problem as the previous poster. My FAST backup is 64GB and my remaining HD space is 77GB so unfortunately copying the USMT2.UNC leaves no room for extracting...at least that my guess? I tried using the rmv2opq command for the file stored on my USB HDD e:\ but it just gives me the following error: "Error opening source file e:\backup\USMT2.UNC. Error: 5"

Unknown said...

I did it a you told me but when i type in the FASTconv /i /s:USMT2.UNC /d:des /t:tmp /k bit it just comes up with source store invalid :(. Please help!!!!

I have tried several times and locations of the FAST folder (C drive, external drive, desktop)
and always get the same result - a description of the parameters of the program and a return to the command line.

I too just got to tmp\transdb.dat file an then get error message. Has anyone found a resolution for this? It seems to be working but it halts about 50% thought.

Get FastImgWiz from fastimgwiz.com. It's easier to use than fastconv.exe.

Anonymous said...

if you get the source data error try with full pathnames like --> s:c:\FAST\USMT2.UNC /s: <--

Worked for me...

I get the following when running the command line provided:

FASTconvis not recognizabled as an internal or external command, operable program, or batch file..

Any help would be great - seems like I'm so close!

Thanks!!!

This worked for me. I just pulled the FastImgWiz version of FASTConv.exe into my working directory. (for command line simplicity) and I am off and running. After some research across the inter-webs, looks like this version may be updated for XP SP3 (my backup is from SP3).

It helps having some knowledge of how command line works before even getting to fastconv.

Source file invalid?

Quote path names:

fastconv /S:"C:\FAST\USMT2.UNC" /D:"C:\FAST\des" /T:"C:\FAST\tmp"

That worked for me.

Try and use the fastconf.exe from your fastimgwiz trial download.
It worked for me to solve the source store issue.
Good luck!

Thank you! I had to download the FASTimgWiz application package(zip file) and installed it. Then I went to the directoy(C:\Program Files\FASTImgWiz\fastconv) and copied the new version of "FASTconv.exe" to the location where I want to extract the file and ran the command

fastconv /S:USMT2.UNC /D:des /T:tmp

as described and it is working... the files are being processed now.. :)

THANK YOU!!!!

Thank you so much! Your instructions helped a lot!

for years I kept this file saved and I had no idea how to extract it. it took a while to track down the right program. I did it by downloading fastimgwiz, since I couldn't find fastconv on it's own. follow the directions to find fastconv as part of the fastimgconv install then follow the directions on this page. was able to recover decades old pictures and videos of the family. I cried. thank you

Just found a huge USMT2.unc file on an old backup drive. I was plagued with the "source store invalid" error. After wasting hours trying to extract the contents the instructions and comments here saved me. Use the "newer" FastConv.exe from the Fastmgwiz installation and the file is currently extracting.

Many Thanks to everyone!
